How to use this section
Items are split into groups: light, healing, useful items (keys, lockpicks, and items for dealing with entities), and food. There are also special items: Visions items appear only in Visions, while event items appear only in SUPER HARD MODE or the Retro Mode.
The main rule: an item lasts for one run. You can carry it over only through the Rift or by moving straight on to the next floor. So I don’t save my Flashlight for later—I use it wherever it’s dark.
Grab items where you’re sure to find them
- Containers and closets along the way—free, but random.
- Pre-run shop in the elevator—for Knobs.
- Jeff Shop—for Gold: in The Hotel, it always has a Skeleton Key.
- Louie—trade one item for another.
Watch out for Sally: she can swipe an item you’re holding or one you dropped on the floor. Ransom holds items until you pay, then takes them if time runs out.
Buy a Skeleton Key first
In The Hotel, spend your Gold on a Skeleton Key first. It costs 300, and without one, both The Archives and The Outdoors are off-limits. If you’re short on Gold, a Lockpick costs 100 and lets you open a locked room without finding a Key. A Flashlight costs 200 and comes in handy in The Greenhouse, which has at least nine dark rooms.
The Crucifix is the most expensive item at 500 Gold. Buy it only after you have a Key.
